09 Jun A Design Lover’s Guide to Nantucket

By Lauren Wicks
From Nantucket’s storied crafts traditions to its immaculately preserved architecture and wild landscape, a visit to this enchanting destination offers inspiration for every type of aesthete. Here are the best places to stay, best things to do and best things to eat and drink while in Nantucket.
To Stay
If you’re looking for something romantic and a bit off the beaten path, The Wauwinet is just the spot, and it’s the best place for savoring golden hour, thanks to its lush oceanfront lawn and spectacular wine cellar offerings. The only Relais & Chateaux property on the island, this hotel stands in a league of its own, featuring private beaches, unbeatable culinary programming, and a variety of luxury accommodations ranging from traditional rooms to three-bedroom cottages.
Those seeking to be in the middle of the action of Downtown Nantucket will want to consider Faraway Nantucket, a chic boutique property spanning six historic buildings. A stay in the Federal Suite will have you feeling right at home upon arrival, shortly followed by celebratory drinks at Sister Ship, the on-site cafe and cocktail club.

To Do
Nantucket Historical Association is a must-visit destination for design enthusiasts looking to dive in to the island’s rich history of arts and crafts. Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket is a brand-new exhibit set to run from May 23 through November 2, but there are also some fantastic permanent fixtures of the museum, such as the Decorative Arts Gallery, as well as portraits and island scenes galleries highlighting prominent local artists.

The NHA also hosts Nantucket By Design, an annual celebration of all things art, design and history, that will be taking place July 14-17. From panels on fashion and interiors featuring industry luminaries to social events connecting enthusiasts of all kinds, Nantucket By Design is worth planning your summer travel around each year.
Of course, you can’t miss out on the impeccable shopping to be found on Main Street and beyond. Nantucket Looms is a favorite destination for sourcing home decor and textiles from local artisans and craftspeople (there’s even an in-house weaving studio). Additionally, Rafael Osona Auction House is one of the most exciting places to source local antiques, art, and other one-of-a-kind finds that will make for the ultimate souvenirs.

To Eat + Drink
Galley Beach is an eternal favorite for savoring some of the island’s best food and ocean views at practically any time of day (just be sure to secure a reservation as early as possible). However, Topper’s at the Wauwinet is on par in terms of views and cuisine and may be a bit easier to dine at on short notice thanks to its more remote location on the island.
The Club Car is a beloved downtown spot for after-dinner shenanigans while Cisco Brewers is ideal for daytime sipping accompanied by live music and lunch options from top culinary vendors from across the island.
