Weatherly Stroh: (Not Just) Horsin’ Around

The equestrian form is one of both power and grace: taut, sinewy muscle matched to amazingly dexterous movement topped with soulful eyes that speak to an inner-being we can only begin to guess at. It is these attributes that artist Weatherly Stroh captures so vividly in her oil painting of majestic steeds.

With sweeping strokes Weatherly is not only able to capture the essence of a horse’s movement – a loping gait around the pen, a modest trot in a field, or a full out gallop in a polo match – but in her attention to detail she also manages to imbue her subjects with personality, a sense of living and being.

A lifetime of horsing around certainly gives Weatherly the background necessary to portraiture these amazing animals. Growing up on a farm in rural Michigan nourished her deep bond to the rhythms of nature and infused her unbridled love of animals. Later she would take her gift for horse whispering and become a nationally ranked horsewoman.

This affinity fuels Weatherly’s ability to connect with her subjects, while many years of experience as a competitive rider augments her intuitive understanding of horses. Emotion and connection woven through every one of her animal-centered pieces.

You could say art is in Weatherly’s blood. When she was 11, her father gave her a Plein Air paint box that had once belonged to her great, great uncle, Gari Melchers, a globally acclaimed American impressionist painter. This gift would fire her lifelong enthusiasm for painting in oil.

Living in horse-obsessed Wellington, Florida, Weatherly is invigorated by the ever-present dressage, show jumping and polo. Her paintings of sport horses are infused with power and motion, capturing the controlled elegance of equine athletes.

The vibrant light and natural beauty of Florida offer yet another profound source of inspiration. A profusion of flora and fauna flourish under an ever-changing sky, and Weatherly captures the perpetual motion of sea and sky in her striking landscapes.

A passionate advocate for all animals, Weatherly donates a portion of the proceeds from her work to a variety of animal welfare and land preservation organizations.

Travel is another great passion, and Weatherly searches the world to find the inspiring landscapes and animals she can immortalize in her art. (After all, there are horses of many stripes.)
