The Case for Letting Timeless Animal Motifs Roam in Every Home

By Monica Dao

For centuries, animal print has stood as a sartorial and stylistic symbol of boldness. When 18th-century explorers returned to Europe with exotic animal furs in tow, they ushered in an era where animal motifs became synonymous with nobility and worldly refinement.

Christian Dior said it best, “To wear leopard print you must have a kind of femininity which is a little bit sophisticated, if you are fair and sweet, don’t wear it.” This is a sentiment that echoes in today’s interiors. For those daring to make a confident statement, animal prints—think leopard spots, antelope speckles or peacock plumage—add layers of drama and depth. Even a hint of wildlife can add exotic flair without overpowering an entire space.

For example, a well-placed zebra print pillow against a monochromatic backdrop introduces an organic and dramatic focus to a room. Rather than viewing animal print as a competing element, consider this question: what if animal print was treated as a neutral? When smartly placed and used in a muted colorway, it can become less of a pattern and more of a foundational texture. In Florida, where animal motifs have defined our subtropical landscape, they easily create a visual continuum with the outside.

Incorporating natural elements like rattan or bamboo seamlessly complement animal accents. These timeless patterns mix well with traditional, transitional or even ultra-modern visions. As Liz Levin of LL Design House explains, “I love weaving animal print throughout a space—whether it’s wallpaper, an upholstery moment or a stair runner—rather than having one favorite application. You must exercise restraint and edit intentionally to keep it sophisticated. It’s a motif I keep coming back to because it comes from nature, making it timeless. I find it to be a grounding element that also adds a bit of playfulness to the right space.”

Animal prints serve as a subconscious reminder that in nature, each living being is born with its own unique patterns—just like no two human fingerprints are the same. Ultimately, that’s the overarching theme that every homeowner strives for, one that speaks to their own unique spirit and their singular joie de vivre.
