A Matter of Choice

Years ago, I was meeting with a client who was so distraught about the breakdown of her marriage, she did not think she would ever be happy again. Her words and her body language revealed such profound sadness and overwhelming grief. I understood what she was going through from personal experience, but I also knew that she had a choice to make. This choice was an important one because it would determine the quality of the rest of her life.

When faced with challenges, I have found that if we get stuck in feeling victimized, we relinquish our power to others. There will be friends and relatives who feed that sense of self-pity by being critical of those who might have caused us pain. It is up to us to choose a different narrative, to reframe what has happened, and to find the strength to redefine the next chapter of our lives. After all, each life crisis offers us an opportunity to reveal what we are made of.

This client chose the high road and over time sought the help she needed to put the pieces back together. She is now a successful entrepreneur who embraces life and exudes joy. Her financial future is secure and the legacy that will follow her transcends financial assets. The way she lives her life will inspire others to do the same. It has certainly inspired me.

In my role as a financial coach to my clients, I have witnessed countless examples of individuals who overcame disappointment and sorrow to embark in a new journey – a journey where they are the authors of their own destiny. It does not happen overnight because it takes time to heal and to accept a new reality. But once you’ve taken charge, there is no looking back.

My professional mission statement is to help my clients achieve financial peace of mind. In my almost 30 years of experience, I have come to realize that peace of mind is the ultimate reward to a life well-lived. And while many people agree that money is not the most important thing in our lives, most agree that unless we are good stewards of our financial resources, it becomes overly important and consumes our every thought.

Having a solid financial foundation, with clear strategies that reflect our goals is a critical factor in achieving financial peace of mind. We must drive our financial decisions based on what we value and what we want to leave as a legacy for future generations: whether it is resources or life lessons.

Those of us who chose a career in financial coaching realize that we have a front row seat in the lives of our clients. We are deeply aware of the responsibility of advising them to not only grow their assets, but also helping to achieve financial peace of mind for them and their loved ones. A high calling but a very worthy one!
