02 Mar A CONVERSATION WITH Kyle Bartholemew Fant & Matteo Minzoni
Q. How do you use today’s design technology while still creating architecture that feels timeless and well-crafted?
For us, it almost always begins by hand. Sketching on trace paper allows ideas to stay loose, intuitive, and human. There’s a freedom in that first line that no software can replace.
From there, those early sketches are carefully translated into the latest 3D modeling, computing, and scanning technologies, where the ideas gain precision, structure, and performance.
Q. Why do you still love painting your designs by hand?
I once visited a client in their Manhattan office on a cold winter day, and hanging on the wall was an original painting of their sun-washed Palm Beach home set in tropical landscaping. It was a little reminder of warmth, light, and their happy place right there in the middle of the city. I couldn’t think of a better gift to give a homeowner!
Q. What do you enjoy about using painting as a way to explore architecture?
With just a few intentional strokes, painting allows me to distill the designer and owner’s vision. Revealing the ideas, values, and craftsmanship that define the architecture through an artistic medium.
Q. In what ways does the Florida environment influence your creative process?
The lush vegetation with its endless shades of green, the expansive skies, and the sunsets that shift through blues, pinks, purples, and touches of orange and yellow all create a visual poetry that feels almost otherworldly. The ocean, with its deep blue green and turquoise tones, adds another layer of magic. I weave these colors into my palette whenever I can. It’s my way of expressing a deep love for color and light, honoring the visual poetry that Florida offers every day.
